Ever watched a video tutorial where the presenter highlights just one part of the screen, dimming the rest? That neat trick is called a spotlight effect. In RecMaster v3 update, the Spotlight Tool lets you do exactly that — it keeps your viewer’s eyes glued right where you want them.

Imagine being at a concert. The stage is dark, but a single beam of light shines on the singer. That’s exactly how spotlight works in your videos — it focuses your audience’s attention. No distractions, no “wait, where’s the mouse going again?”
If you’re making how-to videos, software walkthroughs, or even game guides, the spotlight tool is your new best friend. It visually guides your viewers step by step.
Once you open RecMaster and select Full Screen or Custom Area mode, the spotlight feature is tucked neatly inside the recording toolbar (status bar). It’s right alongside magnifier, painterbrush, and screen capture options.
If you can’t find the toolbar, you can also use Alt + l to enable or disable it. You can change the hotkeys by going to Menu>> Settings>> Hotkeys.
Spotlight isn’t heavy, but make sure your PC is up to the task. Ideally, you’ll want:
Windows 7/8/10/11 (64-bit)
At least 4GB RAM
A decent graphics card for smooth rendering
(If your machine runs other screen recorders fine, it’ll handle this too.)
Fire up RecMaster like usual. If you haven’t installed it yet, grab it from the button below — it’s lightweight and installs in under a minute.
Pick your mode: Full Screen, or Custom Area. The spotlight tool works in both of them.
Now look for the Spotlight icon on the Toolbar. Click it, and boom — the spotlight is activated. You can toggle it on or off anytime.
You can also use the hotkeys (Alt + l) to enable or disable it. The hotkeys can also be changed in Menu>> Settings>> Hotkeys.
Sure, the spotlight is awesome. But if you keep flicking it on and off every two seconds, it gets distracting. Use it sparingly, only when you need focus.
Nothing’s worse than recording a whole hour only to find the spotlight was too small or way off-center. Do a quick 10-second test run.
Try combining the spotlight with mouse click effects. That way, viewers not only see where you are but exactly when you’re clicking.
Start with the spotlight on if you’re explaining something important right away. Don’t wait till minute three.
Always double-check how your spotlight looks before hitting record. It only takes a second.
Teaching Photoshop shortcuts? Excel formulas? Spotlight keeps your viewers’ eyes right on the cell or tool you’re using.
If you’re showing slides or diagrams, highlight key parts as you talk about them. Your students will thank you.
Want to show the exact spot on a map? Use spotlight to point it out without cluttering the whole screen.
Cursor effects are awesome, but they only show the cursor. Spotlight dims everything else — much more dramatic and attention-grabbing.
The highlight pen draws on screen. The spotlight follows your cursor dynamically. They both rock — but serve slightly different purposes.
Make sure it’s enabled in the toolbar.
Update your graphics driver.
Restart RecMaster.
If the spotlight seems to stutter, lower your recording resolution or close other heavy apps.
That’s pretty much the rundown on using RecMaster’s Spotlight Tool. It’s one of those small features that make a huge difference. Think of it as your video flashlight — wherever you shine it, that’s where people will look.
So go on, give it a try in your next recording. You’ll look like a total pro, and your viewers will stay locked in.
Not currently. RecMaster’s spotlight is circular by design to keep the focus natural.
Not currently, but you can choose Full Screen or Custom Area to record the game with Spotligh on. Whether you’re recording games, tutorials, or streaming, the spotlight tool is there for you.
Absolutely! You can use the default hotkey combination Alt + L to enable or disable the spotlight. If you’d like to customize it, just go to Menu > Settings > Hotkeys to change the key combinations.
Double-check that it’s turned on before starting. Also, preview with a short test clip.
Yes, the spotlight feature is available in the free version, but there’s a 2 minute recording limitation and a watermark on the recorded video.
